flag retirement ceremony
On Flag Day, 14 June 2024, the Post held a Flag Retirement Ceremony on the Courthouse grounds. In addition to Veterans, LEOs and First Responders were represented
setting up the memorials
On Friday, 17 May 2024, members of Post 109 set up Memorials and Flags at Veterans Memorial Park. Thanks are given to James Fulghum, Ed Dailey, Steve Jones, Randall Graham, and Thomas Morrison. Memorials will be in place until 1 June 2024.
Hart COunty HS Senior Awards
Commander James Fulghum and SAL Commander Thomas Jordan awarded $1000 American Legion Post 109 Merit Scholarships. The three deserving students were Kylie Rowland, Sawyer Boyd and Peyton Mewborn. Congratulations!

2023 - 2024 Jrotc awards ceremony
On Wednesday, 17 April 2024, Hart County High School held it’s JROTC Award Ceremony. Commander James Fulghum presented 3 awards for American Legion Post 109
- Scholastic Excellence – Jackson Carter
- Military Excellence – Esther Chin
- Americanism – Samantha Wilson
In addition to the American Legion awards, several organizations presented awards as, well. Among these organizations were VFW Post 8076, Daughter of the American Revolution, and the Special Forces Association. Cadets were also recognized in the areas of academic excellence, physical conditioning, athleticism, leadership, community service and patriotism. The final award was the NCO Leaders Award given to Nicole Whaley
We would like to thank Colonel Carter and Sergeant Faban for their time, dedication and mentoring of these deserving Cadets. You have made an impact on their future endeavors and the Nation.

american Legion birthday
The American Legion was founded in 1919 and turns 105 on March 15th. Post 109 Hartwell, Ga. founded 1920 turns 104!
Wreaths Across america
On 13 December, the trucks arrived from Maine carrying the wreaths. The next day, wreaths were placed on the graves of Veterans in three different locations. Six Wreaths were also placed at the Viet Nam Memorial. The following Saturday, 16 December, there was a Ceremony held inside the Courthouse.
Thanking our aging veterans and surviving spouses
On Thursday, 9 Nov 2023, Members of the Post visited three local facilities. These were the Hart Care Center, Brookdale Assisted Living and Hartwell Health and Rehabilitation. Veterans and surviving spouses were thanked for their service and support. They were given special Veterans blankets as well. It was an honor to recognize these amazing people.
One of the moments that was special was the thanking of 94 year old World War II veteran. He was 17 years old when he was on a ship headed to Europe. However, on his journey over Germany surrendered. He didn’t think he was a war veteran. It wasn’t till he talked to some of the soldiers over there and they explained that he was there to relieve them and thanked him. It was an honor and privilege to thank and talk to this WWII veteran.

New vice commander
At the Executive Meeting on 1 October 2023, Scottie Rowland was sworn in as the new Senior Vice Commander.
A Certificate of Appreciation was given to Matthew Murdock of Ed Murdock Superstores. The certificate was awarded for bringing a new vehicle to our golf tournament every year. A chance was given to win this truck to the first golfer who got a hole-in-one on the 15th hole.
Memorials Placed for Our Fallen Heroes
On 20 May 2023, Memorial Crosses were placed in Veterans Memorial Park. 69 Crosses were placed to honor our Military Members who gave the ultimate price to preserve our freedoms. 6 Crosses were placed in front of the Viet Nam Memorial to give honor to those that gave their lives there.
Afterwards, flags were placed on Veterans graves in Nancy Hart Memorial Garden, Northview Cemetery and Garden of Prayer. Thanks to all that volunteered.
